How it plays

How does Puyo Puyo play?

Puyos fall in pairs into a vertical playfield viewed from the side. Move each pair horizontally, rotate it, and drop it into position before the stack reaches the top.

Match four or more Puyos of the same color to clear them. Pieces above fall into the gaps, potentially creating chains; larger chains send more nuisance Puyos to the opposing field. The game includes computer-controlled character battles and competitive two-player play, with progression through successive opponents in the solo mode.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Puyo Puyo?

Plan around the bottom of the field rather than placing every pair immediately. Keep several colors available so incoming pieces can complete existing groups without creating an uneven tower.

Build chains by leaving connected groups intact and allowing falling Puyos to trigger the next clear. In versus play, watch the opponent's nuisance-Puyo meter and favor reliable chains over risky large stacks when the field is close to full.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Keep the center column open when possible; it is often the most important space for preventing a top-out.

  2. 2

Rotate pairs before they reach the bottom so the next landing does not block a planned chain.

  3. 3

In two-player matches, send nuisance Puyos with chains rather than isolated four-Puyo clears.
