How it plays

How does R-Type play?

The game uses a side-view perspective and automatically scrolls from left to right. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemies and obstacles, and defeat a large boss at the end of the level.

The R-9 can fire rapid shots or hold the fire button to charge a stronger beam. Power-ups improve the weapon, while the Force pod can be attached to the front or rear of the ship, launched independently, or used as a shield. The arcade version is a single-player game with limited lives and continues governed by the machine settings.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play R-Type?

Learn enemy and obstacle patterns instead of advancing recklessly. Keep the Force pod positioned where it can block incoming fire, and launch it to attack enemies from a safer angle.

Charge the beam before predictable enemy waves or boss openings. Preserve a safe route through narrow passages, because losing the R-9 also removes accumulated weapon power and can make recovery difficult.

Meet the cast

Who are the key characters?

R-9

The player's main combat spacecraft, equipped with the Wave Cannon and Force pod.

2

Bydo Empire

The hostile biomechanical enemy force that controls the game's stages and bosses.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use the Force pod as both a weapon and a shield; its placement is often more important than raw firing speed.

  2. 2

Memorize boss movement and attack cycles, especially after reaching a new stage.

  3. 3

Avoid unnecessary deaths after collecting power-ups, since restarting with weak equipment is dangerous.
