Red Hawk
The advanced fighter aircraft controlled by the player and the central icon of the game.
How it plays
Red Hawk uses a top-down vertical-scrolling perspective. The objective is to survive successive stages by shooting airborne and ground-based enemies, avoiding their fire, and defeating stage bosses.
The aircraft moves freely within the play area while the screen scrolls upward. Weapon power-ups improve offensive capability, and losing a life reduces the player's progress in the current attempt. The game is structured around repeated arcade runs rather than a persistent campaign or character-driven story.
Plan your run
Keep the aircraft moving in controlled patterns instead of making constant sharp turns. Watching enemy entry points and preserving room to dodge is generally safer than staying directly beneath targets.
Collect weapon upgrades when the route is clear, but do not cross dense projectile patterns solely to reach a power-up. Learn boss attack cycles and prioritize survival over maximum firepower when the screen becomes crowded.

Red Hawk is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up developed by ESD for arcade systems and released in 1997. The player pilots a combat aircraft through hostile airspace, destroying enemy formations, avoiding projectiles, and confronting large end-of-stage bosses. Its play style follows the established arcade format: short attempts, immediate controls, collectible weapon upgrades, and a steadily increasing challenge. Red Hawk is notable within the late-1990s arcade shooter field for its straightforward presentation and conventional power-up-driven combat. Contemporary documentation and surviving arcade references are limited, so its original reception is less clearly recorded than that of better-known genre leaders. It is nevertheless recognized as an ESD-developed vertical shooter.
