How it plays
Renegade is a side-view action game played across several urban stages. The objective is to defeat waves of gang members, survive hazards, and reach a stage boss. Most fights take place in bounded areas rather than continuously scrolling corridors.
Players move, jump, punch, kick, grab enemies, and throw or strike opponents at close range. Enemies can attack from both sides, so positioning and crowd control are important. A motorcycle sequence changes the pace by requiring the player to fight while moving through traffic. Defeated stages advance the story, but there is no character-level progression or equipment system.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the screen so enemies cannot surround Kunio as easily. Prioritize opponents approaching from behind, then use grabs or throws to create space.
Use jumps and attacks carefully because missed strikes leave Kunio exposed. In motorcycle sections, watch the traffic pattern and attack only when an opponent is within reliable range. Learn boss spacing rather than repeatedly rushing forward.

Before you begin
Use throws to interrupt groups and clear space quickly.
Avoid standing at the edge of the screen, where attacks from the opposite side are harder to see.
Renegade is a 1986 arcade beat ’em up developed by Technōs Japan and published internationally by Taito. It is the localized version of Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, one of the earliest games in the Kunio-kun series. The player controls a tough student defending his friends and neighborhood from organized gangs. The game combines side-scrolling street fights with compact single-screen encounters and a motorcycle stage. Its grappling, throwing, punching, and kicking mechanics helped establish conventions later associated with Technōs Japan’s Double Dragon. Renegade received attention for its forceful combat and distinctive presentation, although its difficulty and somewhat rigid controls can make it demanding by modern standards.
