How it plays
Ristar is played from a side-scrolling perspective. Each planet contains stages with enemies, environmental obstacles, collectible items, and a boss encounter. Ristar progresses by moving, jumping, grabbing targets with his arms, and using momentum to pull himself toward objects or launch into enemies.
The stages reward exploration with hidden routes, bonus items, and collectible stars. Ristar has limited health, so careful positioning is important. Bosses use distinct patterns and generally require the player to grab or strike vulnerable points rather than simply collide with them.
Plan your run
Use Ristar’s arms to control space rather than treating them as a simple close-range attack. Grab enemies from a safe distance, pull toward posts and surfaces, and use momentum to reach platforms or strike targets.
Explore before rushing toward the goal. Hidden stars and alternate routes can improve survival and reveal useful items. Against bosses, watch the attack pattern first, then target the vulnerable area during its recovery window.

Before you begin
Learn the reach and timing of Ristar’s arms; most difficult sections become easier once their range is familiar.
Look for grab points above and beside the main path to find hidden areas.
Do not rush boss fights. Their patterns are more important than speed.
Ristar is a 2D action platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1995. The game stars Ristar, a stretchy-limbed star who travels across a group of planets to rescue his kidnapped father and stop the space pirate Greedy. Its central mechanic is a pair of extendable arms used to grab enemies, objects, switches, and distant surfaces. Levels combine traditional side-scrolling exploration with puzzles, hazards, and large boss encounters. Ristar was praised for its colorful presentation, expressive animation, inventive controls, and carefully designed stages, although its release near the end of the Genesis era limited its commercial impact. It has since gained a strong reputation as one of the system’s notable late-generation platformers.
