How it plays
Ristar is viewed from the side across a sequence of horizontally scrolling stages. The objective is to reach each stage’s goal, defeat enemies, collect items, and overcome a guardian at the end of every planet.
Ristar can extend his arms in eight directions to grab enemies, objects, and poles. He can then pull himself toward targets, throw enemies, or use momentum to swing through the environment. Jumping, rolling, climbing, bonus areas, and hidden collectibles add variety, while completing a planet unlocks the next area and leads to a final confrontation with Greedy.
Plan your run
Use the arms for more than attacking. Grabbing poles and enemies lets Ristar control his position, preserve momentum, and reach platforms that ordinary jumps cannot.
Explore each stage carefully for hidden items and bonus routes. Learn boss attack patterns, keep moving around their arenas, and use nearby objects or enemies to create safe opportunities for counterattacks.

Ristar: The Shooting Star is a 2D action platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1995. Players control Ristar, a young star whose extendable arms are central to movement, combat, and puzzle solving. The game follows Ristar as he travels across seven themed planets to rescue the captured legendary Heroes and stop the space pirate Greedy. Its colorful presentation, expressive animation, and distinctive grabbing mechanics earned positive critical attention, although its release near the end of the Genesis era limited its commercial impact. It is now regarded as one of the system’s more inventive late-generation platformers.
