How it plays
Rygar is viewed from the side, with stages built from platforms, ladders, open ground, pits, and enemy formations. The objective is to travel through each area, defeat hostile creatures, collect power-ups, and reach the stage goal or boss encounter.
Rygar attacks with the Diskarmor, which can be aimed in multiple directions. He can jump across gaps and climb between elevations, while scrolling exposes new enemies and hazards. Progression comes from surviving increasingly difficult areas and improving the Diskarmor through collected power-ups.
Plan your run
Use the Diskarmor’s reach to attack enemies before they enter contact range, especially around ladders and platform edges.
Watch enemy approach patterns instead of rushing. Preserve safe footing during jumps, and collect power-ups whenever the route is clear because later sections leave less room for mistakes.

Rygar is a 1986 arcade action platformer developed and published by Tecmo. The player controls Rygar, a returning warrior who must defend the land of Argool from invading monsters and supernatural forces. Its defining weapon is the Diskarmor, a shield-like projectile that can be thrown in several directions while Rygar moves through side-scrolling stages. The game combines platforming, combat, fixed hazards, and vertical exploration rather than relying on simple one-screen action. Its distinctive weapon and demanding controls gave it a strong identity in arcades, and it became one of Tecmo’s better-known action games. The arcade version is faster and more combat-focused than later home adaptations.
