How it plays
Fights take place in two-dimensional arenas, with one opponent facing another in best-of-three-round matches. Players move, jump, crouch, guard, strike with weapons, kick, throw, and use character-specific special techniques. Weapon clashes and heavy attacks can quickly change a round.
The main arcade progression consists of a sequence of battles leading toward Zankuro. Before fighting, the player selects Slash or Bust for the chosen character; these styles alter attacks, specials, and sometimes overall strategy. A versus mode supports direct matches, while the exact available modes depend on the arcade revision.
Plan your run
Control distance instead of attacking continuously. Weapon range is often more important than combo length, and a single heavy hit can decide a round.
Use Slash and Bust deliberately. Learn which special moves, command attacks, and defensive options change between the two styles, then choose the style that fits the matchup.
Watch the opponent's weapon and recovery animations. Punish missed heavy attacks, avoid predictable jumps, and preserve your weapon whenever possible.
Meet the cast
A wandering swordsman and one of the series' central protagonists. He uses a powerful katana style built around decisive slashes and projectiles.
A young Ainu warrior who fights alongside her falcon, Mamahaha. Her style emphasizes mobility, aerial attacks, and nature-themed techniques.
Haohmaru's violent rival. He wields a katana and favors aggressive pressure, powerful counters, and card-themed techniques.
The game's principal antagonist, a massive swordsman whose strength and brutal attacks make him the final challenge.
Before you begin
Treat heavy attacks as high-risk commitments; whiffing one usually leaves the character open.
Practice weapon clashes, guard timing, and character-specific anti-air attacks.
The final battle is far less forgiving than ordinary matches, so conserve life and avoid unnecessary trades.
Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood is a weapon-based arcade fighting game developed and published by SNK. It is the third main entry in the Samurai Shodown series and centers on a confrontation with the powerful swordsman Zankuro Minazuki. Matches emphasize spacing, timing, weapon damage, and punishing mistakes rather than extended combo strings. The game introduced a choice between Slash and Bust fighting styles, giving returning characters different move sets and tactical identities. Its darker presentation and revised mechanics were notable, although contemporary and later reception was mixed because of balance issues, uneven character design, and a feeling that some content was less polished than in its predecessor.
