How it plays

How does Samurai Shodown play?

Players choose a warrior and fight through a sequence of one-on-one matches. A joystick controls movement, jumping, crouching, and blocking, while four attack buttons provide light and heavy slash and kick attacks. Weapons can clash, and fighters can be disarmed temporarily.

The objective is to deplete the opponent’s life bar before time expires. Successful attacks build the POW gauge, which enables a powerful weapon-based attack when full. The single-player route ends with a battle against Amakusa; versus play supports direct matches between two players.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Samurai Shodown?

Control distance instead of attacking continuously. Long-reaching heavy slashes can decide a round, but their recovery leaves the fighter vulnerable if blocked or whiffed.

Watch the opponent’s weapon range, punish missed attacks, and use light attacks to interrupt slower moves. Preserve the POW gauge for a confirmed opening, and remember that losing a weapon changes the risk and reward of close combat.
