How it plays
The game alternates between overhead exploration and turn-based tactical battles. Bowie’s party travels through towns and outdoor areas, speaks with residents, shops for equipment, and chooses the next destination from the world map.
Battles take place on grid-based maps. Each unit can move, attack, cast a spell, use an item, or defend during its turn. Characters gain experience and can be promoted after reaching level 20, unlocking stronger statistics and abilities. Defeating all enemies completes a battle, while losing Bowie ends it.
Plan your run
Protect Bowie because his defeat ends the battle. Keep fragile spellcasters behind tougher units, and use terrain to limit enemy approaches.
Gain experience efficiently by weakening enemies before delivering the final hit, but avoid wasting turns on low-value grinding. Promote characters at level 20 when their pre-promotion statistics and current equipment make the timing practical. Inspect towns carefully for hidden items and optional recruits.

Shining Force II is a fantasy tactical role-playing game developed by Sonic! Software Planning and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It follows Bowie, a young member of Granseal’s Shining Force, as political unrest awakens a powerful ancient threat. The game combines exploration, town conversations, equipment management, and turn-based battles on compact grid maps. Its colorful presentation and accessible character progression made it one of the Genesis’s best-known strategy RPGs. Critics and players generally praised its large cast, approachable combat, and adventurous scope, although its battles can become lengthy and some progression depends on finding optional events.
