Milo
The young knight and principal player character, tasked with rescuing Princess Jessa and defending Thornwood.
How it plays
The dungeon is shown from a first-person perspective. Players navigate interconnected corridors, search for treasure, activate switches, and locate routes through several dangerous areas.
Combat is turn-based and menu-driven. The party can attack, cast spells, use items, defend, or attempt to flee. Characters gain experience, improve their statistics, and equip stronger weapons, armor, and accessories as the adventure advances.
Plan your run
Map every dungeon carefully, especially intersections, dead ends, doors, and one-way passages. Return to town regularly to heal, save, sell spare equipment, and stock up on restorative items.
Use upgrades as soon as they become available, but keep enough money for healing and supplies. In battle, conserve limited spell points against ordinary enemies and reserve the strongest magic for bosses or dangerous encounters. If a route seems impossible, search previously visited areas for switches or unopened paths.

Before you begin
Draw a map while exploring; the first-person layout can make nearby corridors appear deceptively similar.
Check every chest and side path, but do not ignore the cost of returning to town for recovery.
Build a balanced party and replace outdated equipment before entering a new dungeon.
Shining in the Darkness is a first-person dungeon-crawling role-playing game developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega for the Mega Drive and Genesis. The player controls a young knight who must rescue Princess Jessa and confront the sorcerer Dark Sol after the kingdom of Thornwood is threatened. Exploration takes place through maze-like 3D corridors, while battles use menu-based commands and a small party of adventurers. Its emphasis on mapping, equipment, and methodical combat distinguishes it from many contemporary console RPGs. The game received generally positive historical attention for bringing a traditional dungeon RPG structure to Sega's 16-bit platform, although its slow pace and demanding navigation can feel less accessible than later Shining titles.
