How it plays
Players guide a mercenary through vertically scrolling battlefields filled with soldiers, vehicles, turrets, bosses, and destructible objects. The objective is to advance through each stage, defeat enemy formations, rescue hostages when possible, and defeat the stage boss.
Movement is direct and fast. Players fire in eight directions, jump over hazards and attacks, collect weapon power-ups, and use limited bombs for emergency damage. Some stages include drivable vehicles or alternate routes. The game supports one or two players, and progression follows a sequence of arcade missions rather than a persistent character-development system.
Plan your run
Keep moving rather than standing in open areas, because enemy projectiles and vehicles can quickly surround the player.

Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad is a 1998 arcade run-and-gun action game developed by Saurus and published by SNK. It follows a mercenary squad fighting through enemy-held territory to stop a terrorist organization and rescue hostages. The game uses a top-down, vertically scrolling perspective and emphasizes rapid movement, heavy gunfire, vehicle sections, and short arcade stages. Players can choose from several mercenaries with different weapons and abilities, while two-player cooperation supports coordinated attacks. It was generally well received for its energetic pacing, attractive 2D presentation, and accessible controls, although its difficulty and limited arcade length reflect its coin-operated design.
