How it plays
The screen scrolls horizontally from left to right. The helicopter can move freely around the play area, while the jeep remains on the ground and must navigate terrain and obstacles. Players fire continuously at enemies, avoid projectiles, and collect or use power-ups when available.
The objective is to clear successive stages and defeat their bosses. A second player can join as the jeep, creating complementary roles: the helicopter handles aerial threats while the jeep attacks ground targets. Limited lives and arcade scoring provide the main progression and replay incentive.
Plan your run
Stay mobile and avoid fixed attack patterns; enemies can approach from several directions while the screen advances.
In two-player games, coordinate the helicopter and jeep so that one player covers threats the other cannot reach. Learn boss attack timings rather than relying only on rapid fire.
Use the jeep's ground position carefully around obstacles, and save lives by prioritizing incoming projectiles over less dangerous targets.
Meet the cast
The helicopter vehicle, built for high mobility and flexible attacks against air and ground threats.
The jeep vehicle, stronger in direct ground advances and handling terrain-heavy routes differently.
Before you begin
The helicopter has greater freedom of movement, but the jeep's ground position can make some targets easier to attack.
Two-player cooperation is the main strategic feature; divide attention between aerial and ground enemies.
Memorize stage hazards and boss patterns to improve repeated arcade runs.

Silkworm is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcade systems in 1988. The game places one player in a combat helicopter or, in two-player mode, adds a ground-based jeep that fights alongside it. Players move through hostile terrain, destroy waves of mechanical enemies, and survive large stage-end encounters. Its straightforward controls, constant enemy pressure, and cooperative design make it an accessible example of late-1980s arcade action. Contemporary and later reception has generally recognized Silkworm for responsive play and enjoyable two-player cooperation, while noting that its structure is comparatively conventional.
