Directional controls also select options in menus.
How it plays
The game uses a two-dimensional side view. Players run through multi-act zones, collect Rings, use springs and monitors, avoid hazards, defeat enemies, and reach the goal while confronting zone bosses.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have different abilities that open different routes. Progression includes checkpoints, special stages, bonus stages, power-up shields, and the collection of Chaos Emeralds. The combined version also provides a longer connected campaign and a distinct Knuckles route.
Plan your run
Learn the layout of each act before attempting a fast run. Keep Rings whenever possible, because a single hit normally removes them but allows the character to survive.
Use character abilities to explore alternate routes. Check suspicious walls, high platforms, and paths behind hazards for monitors, extra lives, giant Rings, and entrances to special stages.
Collect Chaos Emeralds early when practical. Emerald abilities and Super transformations make later sections safer, although special-stage practice is important because missed Emeralds cannot normally be recovered in the same playthrough.
