How it plays
The game uses an isometric perspective. Sonic moves through maze-like acts, defeats enemies, collects rings, and rescues Flickies hidden in objects or guarded by enemies.
Each act generally requires Sonic to find a group of Flickies and bring them to the exit ring. Losing all rings makes Sonic vulnerable, while collecting enough Flickies opens the way forward. Zones end with boss encounters, and bonus or special stages provide additional challenges.
Plan your run
Search each area before entering the goal ring. Break suspicious objects and defeat nearby enemies, since Flickies are often hidden rather than placed directly on the main route.
Protect your rings and avoid carrying more Flickies than necessary through dangerous sections. In later acts, learn the safest route first, then return for missed Flickies if the level layout allows it.

The main antagonist, who captures the Flickies and uses their energy to power his robots.
Small birds trapped throughout the acts. Sonic must rescue and escort them to the exit.
Before you begin
Use the isometric corners to line up jumps rather than relying on the screen edges.
Keep a ring whenever possible; taking damage without one costs a life.

Sonic 3D Blast is an isometric action-platformer developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1996. Sonic must explore themed zones, rescue imprisoned Flickies, and defeat Dr. Robotnik, who has transformed the birds into energy sources for his machines. The game emphasizes searching and item collection as much as running and jumping, giving it a slower, more deliberate rhythm than most side-scrolling Sonic games. Its pre-rendered visual style and unusual viewpoint made it distinctive on the Genesis. Reception was mixed: critics often praised its graphics and soundtrack while criticizing the perspective, controls, and less immediate platforming.
