How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Players guide Sonic through the original Sonic the Hedgehog stages and the Sonic & Knuckles adventure, collecting rings, defeating enemies, reaching goal markers, and confronting bosses.
Stages are arranged as themed zones with acts, checkpoints, hazards, bonus areas, and progressively tougher platforming challenges. Sonic & Knuckles also adds Knuckles as a playable character when applicable, with climbing and gliding abilities that open different routes.
The lock-on setup is the defining feature: connecting the cartridges enables linked content and special features that are not available from Sonic & Knuckles alone.
Plan your run
Use rings as protection while learning the layout of each act; taking damage without rings costs a life.

Use spin attacks against enemies rather than jumping into unfamiliar hazards.
The cartridge connection is required for the combined lock-on features.
Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic the Hedgehog is a Sega Genesis lock-on configuration combining the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge with the original Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge. Sonic & Knuckles was developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega, while the connected software preserves the original game’s design. The result is a side-scrolling platform game built around running, jumping, spin attacks, rings, and obstacle navigation. Its historical importance comes from Sega’s innovative lock-on technology and the expanded ways it connected Sonic games. Reception has generally recognized the combination as a notable Genesis-era experiment, although it is best understood as linked software rather than a wholly separate game.
