How it plays
The game uses two-dimensional side-scrolling levels. The main objective is to reach each stage’s goal while collecting Rings, defeating enemies, activating checkpoints, and confronting zone bosses.
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles connect into a longer campaign with fourteen zones. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have different abilities and routes; Knuckles can glide and climb, while Tails can fly briefly. Special Stages provide Chaos Emeralds, and collecting all seven enables Super transformations. Save files preserve campaign progress and emerald status.
Plan your run
Learn each character’s strengths before choosing a route. Sonic is the most direct choice, Tails offers flight for recovery and exploration, and Knuckles reaches paths that the other characters cannot.
Keep Rings before dangerous jumps, use checkpoints to practice difficult sections, and explore alternate routes for monitors, extra lives, and Special Stage entrances. Collect Chaos Emeralds early when possible, and save before attempting long boss sequences.
