How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Players guide a selected character through themed zones, moving from left to right while also exploring alternate paths, collecting Rings, activating checkpoints, and reaching the goal. Each zone contains an act followed by a boss encounter, with special stages and bonus stages providing additional challenges.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have different movement abilities, so routes and secrets vary by character. Completing zones advances the story and opens later areas. Collecting Chaos Emeralds enables Super transformations, while the combined campaign adds the longer progression and character-specific content associated with Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Plan your run
Learn the layout of each act instead of rushing every section. Rings protect against most ordinary damage, but keeping at least one Ring is essential because hazards and bosses can otherwise cause an immediate loss of a life.
Use character abilities to inspect alternate routes. Search for giant Rings and monitor checkpoint locations, then practice boss attack patterns before committing to risky jumps. In the combined campaign, collecting Chaos Emeralds early makes later stages more forgiving through Super transformations.

Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic the Hedgehog 3 combines two closely connected Genesis platform games into the complete Sonic 3 & Knuckles adventure. Developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega, it follows Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as they confront Dr. Robotnik and uncover the role of Angel Island and the Master Emerald. The game mixes fast side-scrolling stages with exploration, branching routes, power-ups, and large mechanical hazards. Its lock-on format is historically notable because it joins the campaigns into a longer continuous experience and unlocks additional character content. The combined release was well received for its ambitious level design, polished presentation, music, and substantial amount of gameplay.
