How it plays
Sonic & Knuckles is played from a side-scrolling perspective across multi-act zones. The objective is to reach each goal while collecting Rings, defeating enemies, finding bonus routes, and surviving hazards. Sonic uses speed and standard jumping, while Knuckles can glide and climb certain walls.
The connected Sonic 1 cartridge unlocks Blue Sphere rather than a conventional Sonic 1 campaign. In Blue Sphere, the player guides a character through maze-like special stages, collects blue spheres, avoids red spheres, and tries to clear as many stages as possible. Sonic & Knuckles also includes acts, boss encounters, bonus stages, and Chaos Emerald progression.
Plan your run
Preserve Rings when possible, since one hit normally removes them and a second hit is fatal. Explore side paths for monitors, extra lives, shields, and entrances to bonus areas.
Use Sonic's speed on open ground, but slow down near blind drops and moving hazards. With Knuckles, check suspicious walls and alternate routes because his climbing and gliding abilities open paths Sonic cannot use.
In Blue Sphere, plan a route before moving into dense patterns. Collecting blue spheres in groups can create Rings, while touching a red sphere ends the attempt.
Meet the cast
The fast blue hero. He runs, jumps, spins through enemies, and collects Rings while trying to stop Dr. Eggman.
The playable guardian of the Master Emerald. He can glide, climb certain walls, and break barriers unavailable to Sonic.
The principal antagonist who deploys machines, enemies, and boss encounters against the heroes.
Before you begin
The Sonic 1 lock-on combination primarily unlocks Blue Sphere, not a complete Sonic 1 campaign inside Sonic & Knuckles.
Knuckles' glide and wall-climb are essential for reaching some of his alternate routes.
A shield protects against one hit, but it does not replace the need to collect Rings.
Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic the Hedgehog combines Sega Technical Institute's Sonic & Knuckles with the original Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis through the system's lock-on format. It is a fast 2D platformer built around momentum, precise jumping, collectible Rings, and routes filled with hazards and enemies. The pairing does not turn Sonic 1 into a full Sonic & Knuckles campaign; instead, connecting the cartridges unlocks the Blue Sphere game, a large set of special-stage-style challenges. Sonic & Knuckles itself offers Sonic and Knuckles campaigns with different abilities and routes. Sonic & Knuckles was well received for its level design, character variety, and ambitious lock-on feature, while the Blue Sphere addition became a notable curiosity of the Genesis era.
