How it plays
The game is viewed from fixed, vertically scrolling pinball-table screens. Sonic is launched into a table, and the player uses the flippers to keep him in play while steering him toward ramps, switches, enemies, and bonus areas.
Each major table contains objectives such as collecting Chaos Emeralds, opening routes, defeating hazards, and reaching an exit. Completing a table advances the adventure, while losing all balls ends the attempt. Bonus stages provide additional pinball challenges and score opportunities.
Plan your run
Study each table before aiming for speed. Prioritize switches and routes that open access to Chaos Emeralds, and use ramps to control Sonic’s position rather than striking the flippers randomly.
Watch the ball’s angle near the lower flippers and make conservative saves when possible. Learn the locations of drains, bumpers, and table transitions, because repeated attempts are often needed to complete the later objectives.
Meet the cast
The playable hero, launched through the tables as a pinball and used to collect Chaos Emeralds.
The antagonist whose industrial complex and machines form the setting and objectives of the game.
Before you begin
Use the flippers deliberately and watch for predictable rebounds.
Explore side routes because important switches and Chaos Emeralds are often away from the main lane.
Sonic Spinball is a pinball action game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1993. It places Sonic the Hedgehog inside mechanical pinball tables rather than traditional side-scrolling stages. The main objective is to use flippers, bumpers, ramps, and table hazards to collect Chaos Emeralds and disrupt Dr. Robotnik’s industrial base. Sonic can move through portions of each table, giving the game a stronger platforming element than a conventional pinball title. Its unusual premise and energetic presentation earned it attention as an experimental Sonic spin-off, although its demanding physics and controls received a more mixed reception than the main series.
