How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Guide Sonic, or Sonic with Tails, through themed zones, defeat enemies, collect Rings, and reach each Act’s goal before facing a zone boss.
Most zones contain two regular Acts followed by a boss encounter. Momentum-based movement, slopes, springs, loops, checkpoints, and branching routes shape exploration. Special Stages provide a behind-the-character half-pipe course where players collect Rings and avoid bombs to earn Chaos Emeralds.
The original Genesis version includes one-player, two-player cooperative, and competitive modes. Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds enables Sonic’s Super Sonic transformation when enough Rings are available.
Plan your run
Keep a reserve of Rings whenever possible, since one Ring prevents most damage from defeating Sonic outright. Learn the layouts of stages and use momentum rather than stopping before every obstacle.
Explore alternate routes, especially paths above or below the main line. Checkpoint posts allow access to bonus opportunities, and Special Stages are the main route to the Chaos Emeralds.
Against bosses, watch the attack pattern first, then strike during the brief recovery window. Avoid rushing into a hit just to deal damage.

Before you begin
Use slopes and rolling attacks to preserve speed.
Do not treat Rings as health points that can be permanently banked; damage scatters them.
Tails can collect items and defeat enemies, but cooperative play can make platforming less predictable.
Editorial context
A landmark Genesis platformer praised for its speed, level design, soundtrack, and the addition of Tails.
The two-player split-screen mode is inventive, although the reduced view can make fast sections difficult.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a fast-paced 2D platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Genesis and Mega Drive. Sonic races through distinctive zones to stop Dr. Robotnik from assembling the Death Egg and exploiting the powerful Chaos Emeralds. The game emphasizes momentum, branching routes, rapid reactions, collectible Rings, and frequent use of slopes, loops, springs, and alternate paths. Players can control Sonic alone or play with Miles “Tails” Prower as a companion, while two-player modes add competitive and cooperative options. Its larger stages, refined controls, memorable soundtrack, and introduction of Tails made it a major commercial and critical success, and it is widely regarded as one of the strongest platform games of the 16-bit era.
