How it plays
Players guide Sonic through side-scrolling zones divided into acts, avoiding hazards, defeating enemies, collecting rings, and reaching the goal. Sonic can run, jump, roll, and use slopes, springs, loops, and special terrain to maintain momentum.
The game includes a single-player mode, an optional Tails-controlled companion, and competitive two-player stages. Checkpoints, power-ups, bonus stages, and Chaos Emerald collection support progression toward the ending and Super Sonic transformation.
Plan your run
Maintain momentum, but slow down before blind drops and hazards. Collect rings whenever possible because one ring protects Sonic from most damage.
Explore alternate routes for extra lives, shields, invincibility, and Chaos Emerald opportunities. Learn boss patterns rather than attacking recklessly, and use checkpoints before difficult sections.

Editorial context
A fast, polished Genesis platformer with memorable zones and strong replay value.
The two-player camera and split-screen competition are less consistent than the single-player campaign.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It follows Sonic as he races across varied zones to stop Dr. Robotnik from building the Death Egg and stealing the Chaos Emeralds. The game emphasizes high-speed movement, momentum, exploration, and precise platforming, with Miles “Tails” Prower available as a companion character. Its larger levels, improved audiovisual presentation, and two-player options were widely praised. Sonic 2 became one of the Genesis’s defining releases and established several features that remained important to the series.
