How it plays
Players guide Sonic or Tails through side-scrolling Acts filled with platforms, enemies, hazards, springs, Rings, and checkpoints. Sonic attacks by jumping or rolling, while Tails can fly briefly and carry Sonic in two-player play. Each zone contains two Acts followed by a boss encounter, with special stages and bonus stages providing additional objectives.
The game supports one-player and two-player cooperative play, plus competitive modes using selected stages. Collecting Chaos Emeralds unlocks Super Sonic or Super Tails after all seven are obtained. Save files record progress, and some routes and areas differ between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles experience.
Plan your run
Explore before rushing through each Act. Rings protect against most single hits, and checkpoints provide access to bonus stages, so keep a reserve rather than taking unnecessary risks.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a 1994 side-scrolling platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It follows Sonic and Tails as they investigate the crash of the Death Egg on Angel Island, where Dr. Robotnik and the newly introduced Knuckles pursue competing goals. The game combines fast platforming with exploration, branching routes, collectible Rings, and character-specific abilities. Its larger stages, save system, refined physics, and split-screen competition made it a substantial evolution of earlier Sonic games. Contemporary reception was strongly positive, with praise for its presentation, level design, music, and multiplayer features.
