How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Sonic moves through three acts in each zone, collecting Rings, defeating or avoiding enemies, reaching goal markers, and confronting a zone boss in the final act.
Sonic can run, jump, roll, use springs, and pass through loops and ramps. Rings protect him from most damage, although he loses them when hit; taking damage without Rings costs a life. Checkpoints, monitors, extra lives, and special stages support progression, while Chaos Emeralds are obtained through bonus stages.
Plan your run
Keep a small supply of Rings whenever possible, because they prevent most attacks from causing an immediate life loss.
Use Sonic's momentum carefully. Running is useful, but slowing down before spikes, enemy groups, and blind drops is safer than maintaining maximum speed.
Explore for monitors, extra lives, and special-stage entrances. Reaching the end of an act quickly is not always the best way to find useful items.

Before you begin
Rings are lost on impact but can often be recovered briefly if you move quickly.
A jump can defeat many ordinary enemies, but spikes and some hazards require avoidance.
The final act of each zone is a boss stage with no normal time-limit pressure from an act goal.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D action platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. The player controls Sonic, a fast blue hedgehog fighting Dr. Robotnik and rescuing animals transformed into mechanical enemies. Its stages combine running, jumping, loop-the-loops, springs, hazards, and collectible Rings with a strong emphasis on momentum. The game is organized into six themed zones, each ending with an act boss or special challenge. Released in 1991, it became a defining Genesis title and was widely praised for its responsive controls, energetic presentation, and speed-focused level design.
