How it plays

How does Space Harrier play?

The camera follows Harrier from behind while the scenery scrolls constantly toward the player. Move the flight stick to avoid terrain, trees, enemies, and projectiles, then press the fire button to launch shots at threats and targets.

Stages contain fixed routes, enemy formations, obstacles, and boss encounters. Players progress by surviving each section and defeating its major enemy, with the final objective of completing the Dragon Land journey. The cabinet's moving seat on some versions reinforces the direction of movement but does not change the core rules.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Space Harrier?

Keep Harrier moving, but use controlled sweeps rather than constantly crossing the screen. Watch the space immediately ahead for trees, rocks, and enemies that can be harder to react to than distant threats.

Prioritize targets that fire projectiles or block the route. During boss encounters, stay mobile, learn the attack pattern, and fire whenever the boss is safely aligned. Memorizing obstacle layouts is especially useful for later stages.
