How it plays
Players control Gomez from a side-view perspective. The main objective is to explore connected areas, locate missing family members, and overcome enemies and environmental hazards.
Gomez can move, jump, attack, crouch, and enter passages or doors. The mansion and its grounds contain branching routes, hidden areas, collectible items, and obstacles that require careful timing. Progress depends more on exploration and survival than on a strictly linear stage sequence.
Plan your run
Explore methodically rather than rushing through the mansion. Check suspicious walls, doors, ledges, and dead ends because useful routes and items are often off the main path.
Learn enemy patterns before attacking, and preserve health by avoiding unnecessary contact. When an area seems impassable, search other branches first; progression frequently depends on finding a different route or rescuing another family member.

The Addams Family is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Ocean Software for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It puts the player in control of Gomez Addams, who must search a sprawling mansion and surrounding areas after members of his family disappear. The game combines traditional platforming with open-ended exploration, enemy encounters, hazards, and secret passages. Its presentation draws on the familiar Addams Family setting while using original game scenarios rather than simply replaying scenes from a film. Reception was mixed: reviewers often appreciated the large world and atmosphere, but criticized uneven difficulty, awkward collision detection, and limited guidance. The Genesis version is generally remembered as a challenging licensed platform game with a distinctly nonlinear structure.
