How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Players move through linear stages, defeat groups of monsters, collect treasure, and face a boss at the end of each area. Normal attacks, jumping, class-specific abilities, and magic form the central combat system.
Five heroes have different weapons, reach, speed, durability, and spell options. Experience levels improve characters during the campaign, while equipment and consumable items provide additional advantages. The arcade version supports one or two players, with cooperative play helping manage crowded encounters.
Plan your run
Learn enemy attack patterns before committing to long attack strings, especially against shielded or armored foes. Keep moving to avoid being surrounded and prioritize enemies that attack from range.
Save powerful magic and useful items for bosses or dense groups. In two-player games, spread targets between both characters rather than striking the same enemy unnecessarily. Choose equipment and class abilities that compensate for each character's weaknesses.

Editorial context
A polished Capcom arcade brawler with memorable classes and enjoyable two-player combat.
Its simple stage structure is offset by varied heroes, enemy patterns, and satisfying progression.
The King of Dragons is a 1991 fantasy beat 'em up developed and published by Capcom for arcade systems. Players choose from five heroes and battle monsters through a medieval world threatened by a powerful dragon. The game combines side-scrolling melee combat with light role-playing progression, allowing characters to gain levels and improve their equipment during the adventure. Its five playable classes create distinct approaches, from close-range swordplay to ranged attacks and spell casting. Designed for one or two players, it is known for responsive controls, colorful character art, large enemy encounters, and cooperative play. It received a positive historical reputation as one of Capcom's stronger arcade fantasy brawlers, although its campaign remains challenging and its structure is relatively straightforward.
