How it plays
Matches use a two-dimensional side view. Each team contains three fighters, and combat continues until every member of one team has been defeated. The winner keeps the remaining fighter's health, while the next round begins with the next team member.
Players use four attack buttons, directional movement, jumps, guarding, throws, command moves, and special techniques. The Power Gauge fills through attacks and damage. Stocked gauges enable Super Special Moves, while MAX Activation changes meter use and permits enhanced attacks and cancel techniques. The arcade version includes team battle and single-player progression, with the final encounter following the normal opponents.
Plan your run
Build meter while preserving a strong lead character for later rounds. Team order matters: a character with dependable neutral tools is often useful first, while a meter-hungry character can benefit from fighting later.
Use MAX Activation deliberately rather than spending it immediately. Practice each character's command normals, safe special-move pressure, anti-air attacks, and Super Cancel routes. Guarding and punishing unsafe moves are more reliable than constant attacks, especially against experienced opponents.

Editorial context
A fast, technical team fighter with a large roster and deep meter-management system.
Its competitive focus and demanding execution can be challenging for newcomers.
The King of Fighters 2002 is a 2D team fighting game developed and published by SNK Playmore for arcade systems. It returns to the three-on-three format and removes the previous game's tactical-striker system, focusing on direct combat and resource management. Players select teams from a large roster of SNK characters, then fight through a sequence of opposing teams. The game is known for its fast pace, precise fundamentals, and the flexible Power Gauge and MAX Activation systems. Its balance and competitive depth earned it a strong reputation among arcade fighting-game players, and it became one of the most frequently played entries in the long-running series. The release is often regarded as a refined, competition-oriented KOF rather than a story-driven installment.
