How it plays

How does The King of Fighters 2003 play?

Matches use teams of three fighters. Each character enters one at a time, and a round is won by defeating the opposing team; remaining health carries over between character changes. Players can use normal attacks, command moves, special moves, and super techniques.

The main system is Tag Battle. A player can switch the active fighter during play, including during certain attacks, and can use tactical tag opportunities to change momentum. Wins and losses are shaped by team order, power stock, health management, and the timing of Leader and tag-related techniques.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The King of Fighters 2003?

Build teams with complementary ranges and power requirements. A durable point character can create an early advantage, while a strong finishing character benefits from the extra Power Gauge stock gained later in the order.

Use tags to escape unfavorable matchups, preserve a damaged fighter, or extend pressure. Do not switch predictably: opponents can punish unsafe tag attempts and wait for the incoming character’s landing position.
