How it plays

How does The King of Fighters '96 play?

Matches use one fighter at a time from a team of three. When a character is defeated, the next teammate enters, and the winner retains a limited amount of health for the next round. The objective is to defeat the opposing team before the time limit expires.

Players move on a two-dimensional plane, using punches, kicks, command attacks, special moves, and super special moves. The Power Gauge enables stronger techniques, while the selectable Extra and Advanced modes change how power, dodging, and meter management work. Arcade progression leads through a sequence of teams and ends with major boss encounters.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The King of Fighters '96?

Learn the spacing and recovery of each character's normal attacks before relying on special moves. Confirm short attacks into a special move or super when the opponent is within range.

Choose a mode that matches your style: Advanced rewards careful meter management and running movement, while Extra provides a different defensive and power-building rhythm. Preserve healthier team members when possible, since damage carries into later fights.
