How it plays

How does The King of Fighters '99 play?

Players assemble a team of three fighters and one Striker, then battle opponents in two-dimensional one-on-one rounds. The three active fighters are defeated one at a time, and the team with the last standing member wins.

The four attack buttons provide light and heavy punches and kicks. Players can move, jump, dash, block, perform command attacks, special moves, and Desperation Moves. The Striker can be called during combat for a supporting attack, while Power Gauge management and guard tactics influence each match.

Arcade mode advances through a sequence of team battles and ends with story-related opponents. Character order, meter use, counter-hits, and the timing of Striker calls are central to progression through the ladder.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The King of Fighters '99?

Learn the strengths of each active fighter and assign a useful Striker rather than selecting a team only by character preference.

Preserve Power Gauge resources for reliable reversals, guard-cancel options, and Desperation Moves. Use jumps and hops carefully, because predictable aerial approaches are easy to punish.

Practice each character's basic confirms, command moves, and safe block strings. Team order matters: place characters with strong meter efficiency where they can make the best use of accumulated gauge.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use the training or versus environment, when available, to test Striker timing and command inputs.

  2. 2

A Striker call is most effective after an opponent commits to a recovery animation or while they are pinned by a block string.

  3. 3

Do not spend all of the Power Gauge early if the next fighter has strong Desperation Move conversions.
