How it plays
The game uses a side-view, one-on-one fighting format. Each match is won by defeating the opponent within the time limit, and the arcade mode continues through a sequence of increasingly difficult battles before a character-specific conclusion.
Players move, jump, crouch, attack with weapon or martial-arts techniques, guard, and use special moves. The Power and Speed styles alter the emphasis of a character's offense: Power favors stronger attacks and finishing techniques, while Speed supports rapid attacks and combo-oriented play. Parries, counters, guard breaks, and super moves reward timing and careful resource management.
Plan your run
Learn the reach and recovery of the chosen character's basic attacks before relying on special moves. Stay just outside the opponent's range, punish missed attacks, and use parries or counters only when the timing is reliable.
Choose Power for stronger individual hits and more direct damage, or Speed for pressure and combo opportunities. Preserve enough energy for defensive decisions and desperation techniques instead of spending every resource immediately.
In arcade mode, observe the opponent's repeated patterns. Many encounters become easier when you block patiently, punish unsafe attacks, and avoid jumping predictably.

The Last Blade is a 1997 weapon-based fighting game developed and published by SNK for arcade systems. Set in Japan during the Bakumatsu period, it follows swordsmen and martial artists drawn into a conflict involving supernatural forces and the boundary between life and death. Matches emphasize spacing, precise attacks, parries, counters, and powerful desperation techniques rather than projectile-heavy zoning. Its roster, atmospheric presentation, and distinctive period setting helped it earn a strong reputation among arcade fighting-game fans, although it remained less commercially prominent than SNK's Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series. The game offers a story-driven arcade ladder, competitive two-player matches, and multiple fighting styles that change how characters build and use power.
