How it plays
The game uses a horizontal side-scrolling perspective. The objective is to clear a sequence of combat stages by destroying enemy aircraft, armored vehicles, ships, installations, and large bosses.
Players select a pilot and aircraft, then use a standard gun, missiles, and a chosen special weapon. Destroyed enemies provide money, which can be spent between missions on new aircraft, upgrades, and ammunition. The arcade version supports one player at a time and continues through credits.
Plan your run
Conserve missiles and special weapons for armored targets, enemy formations, and bosses rather than using them on every small aircraft.
Buy aircraft and upgrades according to the mission ahead. Learn which targets can be destroyed safely from a distance, and keep moving to avoid ground fire and enemies entering from the sides.
Each pilot has different performance characteristics, so choose the one whose strengths match your preferred balance of speed, firepower, and durability.
Meet the cast
A skilled Japanese mercenary pilot and the central protagonist of Area 88.
An American pilot and one of Area 88's experienced mercenaries.
A large, powerful pilot who serves as another selectable Area 88 combatant.
Before you begin
Shoot ground targets early so they cannot combine with incoming aircraft fire.
Save money for a stronger aircraft instead of spending every credit on minor improvements.
Use the full screen width and change altitude frequently against bosses.
U.N. Squadron is a side-scrolling military shoot 'em up developed and published by Capcom for arcades in 1989. Based on Kaoru Shintani's Area 88 manga, it follows mercenary pilots defending a fictional Middle Eastern kingdom against a powerful enemy force. Players choose from three pilots, each with different strengths, and fly authentic-inspired fighter aircraft through combat missions. The game combines horizontal shooting with limited resources, aircraft purchases, and special weapons, giving it more strategic texture than a straightforward shooter. Its responsive controls, varied missions, and memorable presentation earned it a strong reputation among arcade action games, and it later became widely known through home versions under the same U.N. Squadron name.
