How it plays

How does X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse play?

The game is a side-scrolling action platformer viewed from a 2D perspective. The player selects one of five X-Men and clears missions filled with platforming hazards, ordinary enemies, minibosses, and bosses.

Each hero has distinct close-range attacks, movement techniques, and mutant powers. Missions are selected from a progression screen, and completing them opens later objectives that lead toward the final confrontation. Stages reward careful positioning, attack timing, and choosing the most suitable character for the situation.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse?

Learn the safest attack range for each hero instead of using one character for every mission. Cyclops can control space with ranged fire, while Wolverine and Beast are better suited to close combat when enemies leave openings.

Save special attacks for minibosses and bosses, watch enemy attack patterns before committing to a jump, and use walls, platforms, and the edges of the screen to limit attacks from multiple directions. Replaying earlier missions with a different character is useful for learning movement and timing.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use ranged attacks when an enemy can be safely kept at a distance.

Do not rush bosses; identify their attack cycle before counterattacking.

  3. 3

Try every playable X-Man because their movement and attack reach differ substantially.

Editorial context

What do players highlight?

A technically polished SNES action game with distinctive heroes and strong animation.

Its challenging encounters and relatively short campaign may not suit players seeking a long platformer.
