Yusuke Urameshi
The Spirit Detective and central protagonist, using powerful close-range attacks and spirit energy.
How it plays
Matches take place on a single two-dimensional arena viewed from the side. Fighters can move, jump, attack, defend, use special techniques, and reposition around opponents while managing health and battle spacing.
The main structure consists of versus-style battles and a progression through successive opponents. Several fighters can participate at once, making awareness of off-screen attacks and changing targets important. Character-specific techniques and different movement abilities give each combatant a distinct approach.
Plan your run
Learn the range and timing of each fighter's basic and special attacks before relying on advanced techniques. In multi-character battles, avoid standing between opponents and watch the whole arena rather than focusing on a single target.
Use movement and spacing to create openings, then punish recovery animations with quick attacks. Characters with strong projectiles can control distance, while fast fighters should use mobility to approach from unexpected angles.

Editorial context
A technically impressive Treasure fighting game, especially notable for supporting chaotic multi-character battles on the Genesis.
Its Japanese-only release and unusual mechanics make it less immediately accessible, but the responsive combat has earned a lasting cult following.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen is a Japanese Sega Genesis fighting game developed by Treasure and published by Sega in 1994. It adapts the Yu Yu Hakusho manga and anime, placing its supernatural fighters in fast, screen-filling battles. Unlike a conventional one-on-one fighter, the game supports battles involving multiple combatants, with positioning and target selection playing an important role alongside attacks and projectiles. Players choose recognizable characters such as Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, and Toguro, then fight through tournament-style matches and other competitive encounters. The game was not officially released in North America or Europe, but it later gained a strong reputation among import players for its responsive controls, varied roster, and unusually effective multiplayer design.
