How it plays
The player explores maze-like top-down stages, locating and rescuing neighbors before monsters kill them. Each level contains doors, keys, hazards, supplies, and hidden areas, with an exit that becomes usable after the required rescue objectives are met.
Zeke and Julie can move, fire different weapons, collect items, and switch equipment. Weapons have limited ammunition, while consumable items provide temporary advantages or restore resources. The game supports one-player and two-player cooperative play, and progression advances through a large sequence of themed stages with increasingly dangerous enemies and layouts.
Plan your run
Protect the neighbors before pursuing optional exploration. A stage can become unwinnable when too many civilians are killed, so clear nearby threats and learn the safest routes first.
Conserve powerful ammunition for crowded rooms and dangerous monsters. Search for keys and hidden passages, but leave an escape route when entering areas containing fast or durable enemies.
In two-player games, split scouting duties carefully and regroup before opening risky doors. Track rescued neighbors and remaining supplies so neither player wastes time revisiting cleared areas.

Before you begin
Rescue neighbors as soon as the surrounding room is reasonably safe.
Use the weapon that matches the enemy instead of spending limited ammunition indiscriminately.
Check suspicious rooms and corners for keys, supplies, and hidden civilians.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is an action game with run-and-gun shooting and horror-comedy themes, developed by Lucasfilm Games and published by Konami for the Sega Genesis. Players control teenagers Zeke or Julie as they rescue ordinary neighbors from zombies, vampires, giant ants, werewolves, and other movie-inspired monsters. The game is played from a top-down perspective and emphasizes exploration, quick reactions, weapon selection, and civilian protection rather than simply defeating every enemy. Its colorful presentation and irreverent premise made it distinctive among 16-bit action games. Contemporary and later reception generally praised its humor, variety, cooperative play, and inventive level design, although the difficulty and need to protect vulnerable neighbors can be demanding.
