How it plays
The player explores a series of connected rooms from a top-down view. Castles and labyrinths contain colored keys, a bridge, a magnet, a sword, and the chalice; carrying the correct item opens routes or enables progress.
Dragons pursue the player, while the bat moves objects around the world. The objective is to obtain the chalice and bring it back to the golden castle. Game 1 is the introductory layout, while Games 2 and 3 rearrange the world and add more demanding navigation and enemy behavior.
Plan your run
Learn the connections between rooms and note where each key leads. Keep the sword accessible before entering areas patrolled by dragons, and use the bridge to cross barriers that block normal movement.
The bat can move important objects, so check its current location before assuming an item is where you left it. In the harder games, prioritize mapping the maze and securing the chalice before taking unnecessary risks near the dragons.

Adventure is a pioneering action-adventure game designed by Warren Robinett and published by Atari for the Atari 2600. It places the player in a compact fantasy world of castles, mazes, keys, bridges, and dragons, with the goal of finding the enchanted chalice and returning it to the golden castle. The game is played from a top-down perspective with simple joystick movement and object handling. Its three difficulty levels vary the maze layouts, item locations, and creature behavior. Adventure was highly influential despite its sparse presentation, and it is widely regarded as one of the earliest console action-adventure games and the source of one of gaming’s first hidden developer credits.
