Documented for this version
Joystick Up | Move Q*bert diagonally up-left on the pyramid. |
|---|---|

The Atari 2600 version uses the joystick; no button action is required for ordinary cube jumping.
How it plays
Each round presents a pyramid of cubes. Q*bert must jump from cube to cube, usually changing a cube’s color when he lands on it, until the required pattern is complete.
Enemies such as Coily, Ugg, Wrong-Way, Slick, and Sam create different hazards. Players must plan routes, use the pyramid’s edges carefully, and take advantage of moving discs when available. Later rounds increase the number of jumps or require additional color changes.
Plan your run
Plan a route that keeps Q*bert near safe landing areas rather than jumping randomly. Complete the most accessible cubes first, then use the remaining gaps to control enemy movement.
Watch Coily’s landing position and avoid trapping Q*bert against an edge. When a disc is available, use it to escape or to lure a pursuing enemy away from the pyramid.

Use discs defensively when an enemy blocks the route back to the pyramid.
Qbert is an arcade action game developed by Gottlieb and adapted for the Atari 2600 by Parker Brothers. The player controls the orange character Qbert as he hops across an isometric pyramid and changes every cube to a required color. The game is built around short, increasingly difficult rounds rather than exploration or a conventional story. Enemies descend onto the pyramid, while falling from its edges can also cost a life. The Atari 2600 version simplifies the arcade presentation but preserves the distinctive jumping puzzle and enemy-avoidance formula. It was widely recognized as one of the more notable home versions of a popular early-1980s arcade game, although its visuals and sound are necessarily reduced on the console.
