How it plays
Metal Slug 5 is a two-dimensional side-scrolling shooter. The objective is to reach the end of each mission, rescue hostages, destroy enemy formations, and defeat a stage boss. Players can run, jump, fire in eight directions, use grenades, knife nearby enemies, and operate tanks or other vehicles.
The arcade campaign is divided into five main missions with branching-looking routes and frequent set pieces. Weapons and vehicles are collected during stages, but their ammunition and durability are limited. Death usually costs a life and returns the player to a checkpoint or the current section, while cooperative two-player play increases the number of soldiers on screen and changes enemy pressure.
Plan your run
Conserve heavy weapons for dense formations and bosses rather than spending them on isolated soldiers. Learn the timing of traps and memorize enemy entrances; many deaths come from advancing before a threat has appeared.
Use vehicles aggressively, but watch their durability and leave them before a forced destruction or hazard. In two-player games, coordinate grenade use and avoid crossing in front of one another during boss attacks.

Metal Slug 5 is a 2003 arcade run-and-gun game developed and published by SNK Playmore. It follows the regular Peregrine Falcons as they battle the Ptolemaic Army, a cult-like faction seeking the power of an ancient artifact. The game uses side-scrolling stages filled with infantry, vehicles, traps, destructible scenery, and large bosses. Players choose one of four soldiers and fight through a fixed sequence of increasingly difficult missions. Its hand-drawn animation, dense enemy patterns, comic timing, and immediate controls continue the series tradition, while the new faction and more elaborate settings give it a distinct identity. Reception generally praised the action and presentation, although the short campaign and limited amount of new content were commonly noted.
