How it plays

How does Metal Slug play?

Metal Slug is viewed from the side. The objective is to move through six linear missions, defeat enemy soldiers and machines, rescue prisoners of war, and destroy a stage boss.

Players walk, jump, fire in eight directions, throw grenades, and can enter the SV-001 Metal Slug tank when it is available. The tank can move, jump, fire its cannon, and use its machine gun, but it can be destroyed. Weapon pickups provide temporary firepower, while lives and continues support repeated arcade attempts.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Metal Slug?

Learn enemy entry points rather than rushing blindly; many threats appear from fixed locations. Keep moving while firing and use grenades on clustered enemies or armored targets.

Rescue prisoners whenever it is safe, since they can provide weapons or useful score bonuses. Save the Metal Slug’s cannon for vehicles and bosses, and remember that the tank can be damaged by repeated hits.

On boss encounters, prioritize avoiding projectiles over dealing maximum damage. Short jumps, crouching, and firing diagonally are often safer than standing still.
