How it plays
Matches are viewed from a fixed side perspective. Each fighter has a life bar, and the objective is to win two rounds before the opponent does. Players move, jump, crouch, block, and use high or low punches and kicks.
The single-player ladder advances through regular opponents, endurance battles, and boss encounters. A two-player mode supports direct competition. Special moves require specific joystick directions combined with an attack button, while a finishing move can be performed after the opponent is defeated when the game permits it.
Plan your run
Learn the range and recovery of each normal attack before relying on special moves. Blocking is essential against predictable jump-ins, and crouching attacks can interrupt careless approaches.
Conserve jumping attacks for clear openings, then confirm them into a short ground combo. Against Goro and Shang Tsung, prioritize safe single hits and defense rather than repeated risky attacks.

Mortal Kombat is a one-on-one fighting game developed by Midway Manufacturing and released for arcades in 1992. It presents a martial-arts tournament in which Earthrealm champions face supernatural and otherworldly opponents. The game uses digitized performer imagery, a five-button control layout, and a dramatic presentation that helped distinguish it from contemporary fighters. Players select from a small roster with different special moves and fight through a sequence of increasingly difficult matches. Its bloodier presentation and finishing moves attracted controversy, but the game was also a major commercial and cultural success. Mortal Kombat established a long-running fighting series and became one of the most recognizable arcade games of its era.
