How it plays

How does Ninja Gaiden play?

The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Ryu moves through linear stages, defeats waves of soldiers and creatures, avoids hazards, and reaches a boss at the end of each area. The joystick controls movement and jumping, while separate attack and jump buttons support sword strikes and aerial attacks.

Stages contain platforms, ladders, pits, and moving hazards. Players progress by clearing encounters rather than collecting extensive equipment. Limited continues and escalating enemy pressure make positioning, timing, and learning boss patterns central to survival.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Ninja Gaiden?

Stay near the center of the screen when possible so enemies approach from a manageable angle. Attack before opponents are within striking distance, then jump over groups rather than trading hits.

Learn each boss's approach pattern and use short attack windows. Preserve lives and continues by avoiding unnecessary jumps near pits, and clear enemies before climbing ladders or entering narrow platforms.
