How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective for towns, dungeons, and outdoor areas. Players travel between locations, speak with residents, collect clues, purchase equipment, and fight enemies in turn-based encounters.
Rolf forms a party from several specialized characters. Battles require selecting commands for each party member, exploiting weapon and spell strengths, and managing healing and resources. Story events unlock new areas, while experience levels, weapons, armor, and techniques improve the party’s ability to survive increasingly dangerous zones.
Plan your run
Explore each newly opened area carefully and return to town often to upgrade equipment. Healing items and techniques are especially important because random battles can be frequent and dungeons are difficult to navigate.
Build a balanced party rather than relying only on physical damage. Save before major story events, conserve technique points for dangerous encounters, and mark dungeon routes manually so that valuable items and exits are not missed.

Phantasy Star II is a science-fiction role-playing game developed by Sega AM7 and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It follows government agent Rolf as he investigates a mysterious biological threat spreading across the Algo solar system. The game combines overhead exploration, menu-driven turn-based battles, equipment management, and a large party of recruitable companions. Its darker story, challenging combat, and substantial scope earned strong historical recognition, although critics also noted its high difficulty and limited visual guidance. It became one of the Genesis library’s defining Japanese-style RPGs.
