How it plays

How does Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom play?

Players explore an overhead world map, towns, caves, ruins, and other locations while speaking with residents and searching containers and chests. Encounters lead to turn-based battles in which the party selects attacks, techniques, items, or defensive actions from menus.

The story is divided into generations. Rhys makes a marriage choice that determines the next protagonist, and later generations offer further route changes. New party members, weapons, armor, techniques, vehicles, and areas become available as the chosen storyline advances. The objective is to uncover the truth behind the long conflict and reach the ending associated with the selected lineage.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom?

Buy the best affordable equipment before entering a new dungeon, and keep several healing items available because random encounters can be frequent.

Record marriage and route decisions separately if you want to see different generations. Explore towns thoroughly for recruits, shops, healing points, and story events, and use techniques strategically rather than spending all of the party's resources early.

Save before major choices and before difficult areas. The available characters, maps, and final events can change substantially between lineages.
