How it plays
Players explore an overhead world map, towns, caves, ruins, and other locations while speaking with residents and searching containers and chests. Encounters lead to turn-based battles in which the party selects attacks, techniques, items, or defensive actions from menus.
The story is divided into generations. Rhys makes a marriage choice that determines the next protagonist, and later generations offer further route changes. New party members, weapons, armor, techniques, vehicles, and areas become available as the chosen storyline advances. The objective is to uncover the truth behind the long conflict and reach the ending associated with the selected lineage.
Plan your run
Buy the best affordable equipment before entering a new dungeon, and keep several healing items available because random encounters can be frequent.
Record marriage and route decisions separately if you want to see different generations. Explore towns thoroughly for recruits, shops, healing points, and story events, and use techniques strategically rather than spending all of the party's resources early.
Save before major choices and before difficult areas. The available characters, maps, and final events can change substantially between lineages.

Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom is a Japanese role-playing game developed and published by Sega for the Mega Drive and released in North America for the Sega Genesis in 1991. It follows Rhys and his descendants as they investigate a conflict between the planets Algo and Canaan, with marriage choices changing the next generation and the eventual conclusion. The game uses overhead exploration, menu-driven turn-based battles, towns, dungeons, vehicles, and science-fantasy equipment. Its generational structure is the central feature: choices made by one hero shape later protagonists, routes, and endings. Reception was mixed compared with the more acclaimed second game, but its unusual branching narrative remains one of the most distinctive experiments in the Phantasy Star series.
