How it plays

How does Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium play?

The player views the world from a top-down perspective, moving through cities, wilderness areas, ruins, and dungeons. Conversations, shops, equipment management, and story events are handled through menu commands and contextual interactions.

Battles are turn-based. The party selects attacks, techniques, magic, items, and defensive commands, then acts according to character speed. Up to five active characters can fight, and the party gains experience, levels, equipment, and new abilities while progressing through a largely linear sequence of planetary chapters.

Combination techniques let specific party members coordinate abilities for stronger effects. Characters can also be assigned to macros that automate repeated battle commands.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium?

Maintain a balanced party with physical attackers, healers, and characters capable of exploiting enemy weaknesses. Keep several healing and status-curing items available, especially before entering unfamiliar dungeons.

Use combination techniques when their component abilities are affordable and appropriate for the enemy. Upgrade weapons and armor regularly, and revisit towns after major story events because new equipment and services may become available.

Save frequently at towns and terminals. Dungeon routes can be long, and some areas contain difficult encounters or story battles that punish an underleveled party.
