Pitfall Harry
The explorer controlled by the player. Harry searches the caverns for treasure and attempts to rescue his companions.
How it plays
The player guides Pitfall Harry through side-scrolling cavern passages filled with pits, enemies, water, and other hazards. The objective is to explore the route, collect valuable items, and rescue the expedition’s companions while reaching deeper sections of the cave system.
Progress depends on careful movement and timing. Checkpoints reduce the penalty for failure, allowing Harry to resume from a previous location rather than restarting the entire expedition. The arcade format adds pressure through limited lives and score-oriented play.
Plan your run
Study enemy movement before crossing narrow passages, and avoid rushing into hazards at the edge of the screen.
Use checkpoints as progress markers. When a route is difficult, prioritize survival and positioning over collecting every item immediately.

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns is a platforming action-adventure game developed and published by Sega for arcade systems in 1985. It follows Pitfall Harry as he explores a dangerous cavern network in search of treasure while rescuing his companions. The game emphasizes traversal, enemy avoidance, precise timing, and recovery from hazards rather than direct combat. Its scrolling underground environments and checkpoint-based structure distinguish it from many earlier single-screen platformers. The arcade version is an adaptation of Activision’s Pitfall II concept and is chiefly remembered for bringing Harry’s cavern expedition to coin-operated play, although the home-console version remains the better-known release.
