How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Joe Musashi advances through linear stages, defeating soldiers, creatures, machines, and bosses while avoiding pits, projectiles, moving hazards, and environmental traps.
Players can slash at close range, throw limited projectiles, jump, crouch, cling to or move along certain surfaces, and activate ninjutsu. Stages include standard combat areas as well as unusual sequences involving horseback riding, surfing, and other moving set pieces. Progression is stage-based, with a limited number of lives and continues separating successful runs from game over.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement rather than rushing every screen. Keep a safe distance from projectile users, crouch when appropriate, and use the sword’s reach to defeat enemies before they can attack.
Save ninjutsu for bosses, crowded encounters, or dangerous set pieces. Practice the timing of jumps and surface movement, and identify safe positions before committing to an attack. Boss patterns are generally more manageable when you prioritize survival over damage speed.
Meet the cast
The protagonist and master ninja controlled by the player. Joe uses a sword, thrown weapons, acrobatic movement, and ninjutsu to oppose Neo Zeed.
Before you begin
Use the sword against nearby enemies instead of wasting limited thrown weapons.
Do not spend ninjutsu automatically; reserve it for difficult encounters or bosses.
Explore movement options, since several stages expect wall movement, fast jumps, or special traversal.
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Megasoft and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1993. It stars Joe Musashi, a highly mobile ninja fighting a renewed threat from the criminal Neo Zeed organization. The game combines sword attacks, thrown projectiles, acrobatic movement, wall techniques, and powerful ninjutsu spells across stages with varied hazards and bosses. Its responsive controls, fluid animation, dramatic set pieces, and demanding but fair difficulty made it one of the most highly regarded action games on the Genesis. It is a direct sequel to Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi and is commonly considered one of the strongest entries in the Shinobi series.
