How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective across a sequence of urban, industrial, natural, and surreal stages. Joe must reach the end of each stage, defeat its boss, and rescue the kidnapped woman while managing health, ammunition, and ninjutsu.
Players can walk, crouch, jump, attack at close range, throw shuriken, and activate one of several ninja arts. Later stages introduce denser enemy placement, hazards, moving platforms, and bosses that require pattern recognition. The campaign is single-player and offers multiple difficulty levels.
Plan your run
Use shuriken to remove dangerous enemies before they enter melee range, but conserve ammunition for crowded sections and bosses. Crouching attacks are useful against low targets, while jumping attacks can safely approach many taller enemies.
Learn enemy spawn points and boss patterns instead of rushing. Save ninjutsu for situations where it prevents damage or clears a difficult group, and adjust the difficulty if you need more forgiving damage and enemy behavior.

Before you begin
Memorize enemy entrances and avoid standing directly beneath elevated attackers.
Keep distance from bosses until their attack pattern is clear.
Use ninjutsu strategically; it is limited and especially valuable in difficult stages.
The Revenge of Shinobi is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1989. Players control Joe Musashi, a ninja seeking revenge against the criminal organization Neo Zeed after it attacks his village and kidnaps his master’s daughter. The game combines close-range martial arts, thrown shuriken, acrobatic movement, and limited ninjutsu in carefully structured stages. Its memorable presentation, demanding combat, varied boss encounters, and atmospheric music helped establish it as one of the Genesis’s defining action games. Enemy and boss designs changed in later revisions because of licensing concerns, but the core campaign and mechanics remained substantially the same.
