About Sega CD

The Sega CD, known as the Mega-CD in most regions outside North America, was an add-on for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive launched in the early 1990s. It expanded the console with CD-ROM support, extra processing hardware, and dedicated audio capabilities, aiming to deliver larger games, streamed music, and video presentations beyond what cartridge systems could easily offer.

Its library is remembered for experimental multimedia titles, enhanced versions of existing games, and several notable original releases. While commercial success was limited by cost, timing, and a fragmented release strategy, the Sega CD became an important stop on the road to CD-based console gaming and remains influential in discussions of early console multimedia design.
